Graphs

In this section we will cover linear and quadratic graphs, reflection, symmetry, slopes, distance between two points and midpoints. Let review some basic concepts.

Lets graph (-2,3). The negative 2 is the x value and called the x coordinate. The 3 is the y value and called the y coordinate. Together they are called an ordered pair. To locate (-2,3) on the graph we count over 2 places to the left of zero on the x axis and then vertically upward 3 places. We use the numbers on the y axis to measure the distance upward. We use the same procedure to graph (-5,-4) only we count vertically down 4 places to locate the -4.

 Try graphing these two ordered pairs;  (2,4), (1,-3)    answers

From your previous work with graphs you should know the following terms:
origin, coordinates (x,y), ordered pair (x,y), quadrants, x axis, y axis, x coordinate, y coordinate,
Cartesian or rectangular coordinate system, horizontal axis and vertical axis (together they are called
the coordinate axis and do not have to be labeled x and y).
